Costantini takes reins of Marine unit

UNION-TRIBUNE
June 13, 2003

CAMP PENDLETON – Marines from the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, who recently returned from fighting in Iraq, marched in review yesterday as Lt. Col. Duffy White turned over command of the unit to Lt. Col. William Costantini.

The new commanding officer, an expert in Middle East relations who speaks Arabic, was an analyst with the Marine Corps' strategic initiatives group in Arlington, Va., before taking over the unit.

He previously served as an observer with the United Nations in Kuwait and was a company commander and battalion executive officer.

White, who led the battalion during more than three weeks of fighting from Kuwait to Baghdad and Tikrit, will be moving to the Naval War College in Newport, R.I.

The battalion uses light armored vehicles, eight-wheeled tanks that are armed with cannon, anti-tank missiles or mortars.
