A bus driver involved in an accident that killed one Marine and injured 22 others last year filed a written plea of not guilty to vehicular homicide and several counts of assault Monday morning in Enterprise.

Howard Glen Miller, 74, of Warrior, was scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Coffee County Circuit Court. Instead, he waived his arraignment and filed the plea. No further court date has been set.

Miller was driving a bus March 9, 2008, on Fort Rucker near Mateson Range in Coffee County when the bus crashed, resulting in the death of Lance Cpl. David Miles, 19. Several others were injured, some seriously. The bus was full of Marines who had just completed a training exercise.

Miller was indicted in August on one count of vehicular homicide, seven felony counts of first-degree assault and 15 misdemeanor counts of third-degree assault. He was arrested in September at his residence in Jefferson County.

According to previous Eagle reports, the crash left at least three Marines with serious injuries, including Staff Sgt. Arthur Sparks, 41, of Locust Grove, Ga.; Lance Cpl. Williams Kuehner, 21, of Helena; and Lance Cpl. William J. Lafitte, 24, of Laurel, Miss.

Miller filed an affidavit of substantial hardship in November, requesting a court-appointed attorney. The court ruled Miller was not indigent and denied the request.
