PFC Chance R. Phelps was in my unit in iraq. He died on April 9th 2004. I was holding the Guide for Kilo 3/11 for his final role call ceremony in Iraq. He was the only Marine that we (3/11) lost over there in Iraq. I personally did not know him (he was in Lima BTRY), but I felt great pride in being my BTRY's Guidon for his ceremony, and cried just knowing that I lost a brother in combat. It's weird, as soon as I heard them say "PFC Phelps" in the movie, chills went through my body and I immediately knew it was about him.

Taking Chance - HBO Movie To Air in February - Follow Up

RE: Taking Chance - HBO Movie to Air in February

Via Corporal Seamus (who is out of the hospital now and recovering), Michael Strobl sends his thoughts on "Taking Chance":

...As requested, here is some info on the movie "Taking Chance."

The movie will debut on HBO on evening of Feb 21st. There will be a screening at Quantico on Feb 10th at the base theater. It's my understanding that it is sold out. I was with Kevin Bacon last Friday and he said he intends to be at the Quantico screening. Gretchen and John (Chance's mother and father) will be there as well. She's coming out on the 9th and staying with us. Unfortunately, Jeff can't make it. After the Quantico screening we're all heading up to New York for a couple of screenings there.

... From my perspective, Stacey and I are very proud of the film. All of the executives at HBO, the cast, and crew were incredible. They all were very dedicated to staying true to the original story, keeping politics out of it, and making something memorable and worthy of Chance's sacrifice. I think they succeeded on all accounts. The Devil Dogs in the USMC Public Affairs office have seen the movie and were quite happy with it. Of much greater importance, Chance's family has seen it and I believe they, too, are quite proud.

Stacey and I are heading off TAD to the Sundance Film Festival tomorrow to attend the world premiere on Friday evening. I'm astonished to say that "Taking Chance" was one of 16 movies selected, out of approximately 3,000 submissions, to compete at Sundance in the Dramatic competition.

<...>

I hope all Marines are proud of this movie.<...>

Semper Fi,
Mike

I am posting this because we had one commenter who said that he saw the movie and it was biased and political.

...Unless there have been some major changes I don't think that most supporters of the troops and the war will be very happy with it. There are several very moving moments in the film, however I felt that the director was really trying to point out that war is pointless and that our soldiers have died for nothing...

And then some of you commented that HBO couldn't make a good military movie (but I recall "Band of Brothers"...anyone?...and their upcoming sister series on the Marines in the Pacific). So I wanted to provide some further evidence that HBO seems to have done a fine job. I haven't seen the movie and probably won't until the 21st or so, but I wanted to give LtCol (ret) Michael Strobl's words some weight here. It's his story and he says it was well done. His word is more than good enough for me.

Be sure to watch "Taking Chance".

As I search for words to describe this upcoming film I realize that LtCol Michael Strobl's own words, has said it all, beautyfully written from the heart, I hope the film can capture his written words. Taking Chance is much more then the story of PFC. Chance Phelps, its the story of all Marines who have made that last trip home with Honor. And to the person that said "however I felt that the director was really trying to point out that war is pointless and that our soldiers have died for nothing"

Chance Phelps died a Marine, protecting Marines, his brothers. I don't
expect you to understand. Chance did die for something, and unless you
have been, you will never understand.

Mount Airy set to premiere HBO film 'Taking Chance'
January 28, 2009 6:00 AM

Mount Airy will turn Hollywood for one night as it premieres the HBO film "Taking Chance" at the resort's event center on Feb. 4. The movie premieres on HBO on Feb. 21, but Mount Airy will host the special premiere more than two weeks ahead of time.

Kevin Bacon stars as Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, who in 2004 volunteered to escort home the body of a 19-year-old Marine killed in Iraq. The movie is based on the real story of Strobl.

The premiere is free, but donations will be accepted for The Wounded Warrior Regiment, an organization that provides assistance to wounded and injured Marines and their families.

Seating for the event is first-come, first-served, but priority seating will be given to uniformed armed service members. There will also be a live performance by the jazz ensemble of the Quantico Marine Band.
