I agree with you DOC, most of the people my age or younger are lazy. However the biggest problem is the misconceptions that are feed to these 18-19 year olds. Nowadays alot of them are taught, by liberal thinkers in schools, and other establishments, or even at home. That joining the Military is a bad thing, and are feed rumors of what the military is like, compared to what it actually is. In my family when you reach the age of 18 there are few things you can do. One is join our local Fire Dept(Volunteer Fire Dept), most of the Family is on the fire dept which includes myself, brothers, and Dad. Another is Join the Military if you want. Now we don't push the Military on our family memebers, We also encourage college, and good job etc. It just comes down to if thats what you want to do, you have support. Myself, Uncle, and my Dad are all Marines. We don't give the perception that the Military is a bad thing we encourage it. All of this remineds me of when I wanted to join the Corps in highschool. The majority of my class was agianst it, and even the counslers, and teachers wanted me to talk me out of it. But I stuck by traditions, ideals, and dreams. No one could steer me away from that. So in all of this in my opinion it comes down to the Peers, and Adults in todays society that are hurting the recruiting goals of the military. Semper Fi Doc:marine:

That's because we are the only ones that are meeting are our numbers, and everyone realises that it doesn't matter what service you join, you'll probably be deployed. They just want to be deployed with the best I think.

The thing that kills me is, what makes them think that they will loose the weight after they join, if they can't even motivate them selves to lose it to accomplish they're goal of becomeing? Not that it would matter. MOST of the local Army/National Guard I know, you would think they already don't have a wieght standard.

D'Onofrio is, in my mind, the true break out performance in this film. This is where he got his real break and no one can forget his performance once they see it. Well, maybe if you see any other movie with Vincent D'Onofrio in it and then see his performance here. That is what is truly amazing about D'Onofrio in Full Metal Jacket.

At that point in his career he did not have a lot of experience on the big screen and to be one of the stars in a Stanley Kubrick movie was huge. He obviously spent a lot of time making sure that he did the best that he could with all of the weight gaining (a record 70lbs.) and characterization. All of the hard work paid off because he absolutely made the first half of the movie and catapulted his career on the big screen.

His character changes over the course of boot camp and although very odd, it is very believable. Can you believe that this is the same actor that is in Steal This Movie or Law and Order Criminal Intent? Overall the acting is good, but Ermey and D'Onofrio were superb.

I only read the first few paragraphs, but I don't like what I hear. Sounds like the Army's getting "bigger" (pun intended). Thank God the Marines aren't reduced to those standards. PT, Rah!

When I went to MEPS, I saw a lot of overweight people who were joining the Army.(in fact every single one of them was over the weight limit that the Marine Corps sets) I was the only person there that was joining the Marine Corps, and I was the most physically fit person there.

Of course we all remmeber "fat body platoon", or some variation. Wander why the Army strong ad campaigners didn't see this coming?

But they left there as physically fit Marines unless they so happen to be put in the lame platoon,lol.:D

I showed my wife that picture last night. She is former Army, and her son and my step-son is current Army. Needless to say we got in a heated debate about it. LOL
