Radio battalion returns to Kaneohe

Associated Press

HONOLULU — After being away for four months, 120 Marines from the 1st Radio Battalion returned to Hawaii on Monday.
The 250-member battalion left Kaneohe on Feb. 9, said Lt. Col. Mark Aycock. Two-hundred of the battalion’s members were sent to fight in Iraq, he said.

Aycock was one of those deployed to Kuwait’s Camp Commando, which came under missile attack on March 19.

“That was scary,” he said. “It was very hairy. The attack occurred around 10:15 in the morning while we were holding a staff meeting. We could hear the impacts.”

Aycock’s wife, Julie, said she hopes her husband will be able to spend more time at home.

“He’s been home for only four months in the last 18 months,” she said. “Last year, he was in Bahrain for six months.”

The remaining 88 members of the battalion are still in Iraq and Kuwait and will return later this summer, he said. Forty other members of the battalion returned last week.
