Former Marine Corps track star of Danville to be honored

A Danville man is one of two former New York track and field stars who excelled as collegians and in the U.S. Marines to be honored at a Marine Corps meet Saturday.

Frank Tomeo, who grew up in Queens, N.Y., and now lives in Danville, will be recognized in ceremonies during the Marine Corps Holiday Classic in New York.

Tomeo ran for Fordham University and later represented the Marines as part of a 1965 national team that ran the second-fastest indoor time in the 800 meters.

He was an Armed Forces champion and an NCAA All-American in the 800, a member of the Armed Forces-champion 400 relay team and an all-Marine champion at 400 and 800 meters. He was also a four-time relay champion in the Millrose Games and a Marine Corps record holder in the 2-mile and sprint relays.

He was twice named Fordham's athlete of the year. He was the national indoor champion at 1,000 meters, ran on a national championship two-mile relay team, an Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America mile relay championship team and mile and two-mile relay champions in the Penn Relays. He is a member of the school's hall of fame.

Tomeo was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1963. He attended graduate school at the University of Bonn and became platoon commander at the school's demonstration troops at Quantico, Va.

He was promoted to first lieutenant, served as regimental intelligence officer for the 26th Marines, promoted to Captain at Okinawa and served as regimental intelligence officer at Khe Sanh, Vietnam.

He will be honored along with Charlie Buchta, who competed for Holy Cross. Both are graduates of the same high school, Brooklyn Prep.
