Second-grade students at Marshfield's St. John the Baptist School were thrilled by a Monday visit from two Marines, who returned on Memorial Day after serving in the war with Iraq.
The students had been writing to Joshua and John Green of Plover and praying for their safety, even though they had never met them before.
"I'm so glad you guys are OK," said Sue Steffek, a second-grade teacher, who knows the brothers' mother, Regina Green. The men's father is Jimmie Green.
Steffek's students and two other second-grade classes at the school wrote letters and sent a care package to Joshua, 21, and John, 20, while they were in Iraq.
"So we sort of made that our mission for our classroom," Steffek said. "I think probably the most meaningful thing was every morning we said a prayer for these boys."
Joshua said he and his brother were thankful for the children's efforts, and they were excited to receive the mail.
"It's the best thing you can get," he said. "I would have skipped a meal in Iraq to get a letter from someone."
John knew he wanted to meet the children after the package arrived.
