View Full Version : A Lot to Ask

I've scoured the Internets furiously to find all of the information I could on joining the Marines as Enlisted, an Officer, Enlisted with college credits, Reservist options, MECEP, OCS, and a few more things that I can't recall at this moment as I've been up for about 26 hours now.

Even though I've gotten information off of the Google sphere from probably all kinds of different Marine corps members, I'm looking to get some genuine information and possible guidance for my own personal plans. If you guys could help me out, I'd be very appreciative. If my plans will not work, then it doesn't matter - I'm still very intent on joining.

Anyway, here's my plan:
I'm 17 and will graduate high school (hopefully o_o) in 2010 (2 years before we all die in the apocalypse). Upon graduation I plan to take my education further to a community college where after about 2 years I can receive my associates degree.
Now, upon "graduating" with an associates, this time I'll speak with a recruiter, get the papers signed for enlistment and have the ASVAB taken (maybe I can enlist as an E-2) and then I'll be on my way to PI.
Once I graduate from boot, I'd like to become an 0651 (network specialist, I believe it is) and wait until I can become an E-3. Once accomplished, I'll fill the papers out for MECEP after I am accepted to a university. Over 2 years I will get my bachelors degree, since I had already obtained my associates, and upon graduation of OCS after the bachelors I'll accept a commission of O-1. This is all given that I am chosen for the MECEP program.

Now, after all of that, I ask you guys to please point out any false material in my plans that may be a problem, or anything really that I have wrong.

The reason I don't want to pursue futher education after the community college is because a) if I do become an officer, I'd like to be able to relate to the Marines I am leading to the very basic level, and b) because paying for the next 2 years of a 4 year college may be somewhat tough depending on my current situation. I like to plan ahead, though, and not wait until making a decision only at that time.

Thanks for reading. I look foward to your help!

Bah, I'm sorry. I meant to say E-4 rather than E-3. There's also a problem with editing my post.

You'll get no answers without a profile. Read the rules and stickies before you go further on this site. I'm feeling mellow this morning, so I'm being polite about this. Someone else may not be.

Is it that uncommon to create a plan like this?

No, but don't cut it into granite just yet. Like my good friend Sgt Sparkie said: Step One is to get through boot camp, everything else is academic until then.

Also, a little tip from your Uncle Zulu 3-6: Marines don't use pay grades to indicate rank. Either use the proper rank, or don't bother at all. If you don't know the proper rank, you haven't been researching the basics enough to worry about all of the technical aspects of your plan.

While researching, look up the KISS principle.

It's good to have dreams,,,and plan for the future you wish for yourself,,,,But in life [as I know it], Things can get stepped on....

Try for it, but don't get broken up by a few bumps in the road. Just seems to me you're countin pretty heavy in that list of yours.

Why do you think one of our mottos is Adapt, Overcome?
In that dream of yours,,, I would ad a little flexability.

I understand fully, Zulu and sparkie.

@Zulu: I will keep it simple and stupid this time. I meant Corporal! =)

@sparkie: Absolutely, I understand where you are coming from. This is just a basis to work on. If I can't become an officer, then I'll just stay enlisted. If I can't even get an associates degree, then it's no problem - the recruiting office is not far.

Thanks for your input. I've learned a lot already.

I'm not looking to get any expert info, just an overlook of some Marines. Since I'm not getting any criticisms I assume that everything is fine... except for the pay grade, profile, and the flexibility problem. I appreciate the advice, though. I'll take it to heart.
