Lazy Beetle Bailey pitches in to help

Associated Press

HELENA, Mont. — Beetle Bailey, cartoonist Mort Walker’s famous Army slacker, will help raise money to build an overnight lodge for families of patients at the Fort Harrison Medical Center, a veterans’ hospital here.
The Montana Department of Veterans Affairs hopes to raise $65,000 toward the $250,000 cost by sales of 1,800 Beetle Bailey posters that Walker designed. The posters are being donated by the Montana Lottery, and Walker will sign 300 of them.

Walker has donated his work to other states and veterans’ organizations in the past.

The proposed Liberty House will provide overnight, low-cost lodging for families of seriously ill veterans who are patients at Fort Harrison Medical Center. Plans call for a 3,096-square-foot, single-level structure with seven bedrooms and a common kitchen. It will replace a 23-year-old building that has been condemned and is being closed.

“We have a goal of obtaining the money for the home by Veterans Day,” said Joe Foster, director of the Montana VA. “What we’re hoping is to have the groundbreaking on Veterans Day.”
