US Marines bring cheer to Kuwaiti children

Published Date: December 23, 2008
KUWAIT: The Marine Security detachment of the US Embassy brought smiles to the faces of scores of children in Kuwait yesterday when they made a large donation of toys to the Children's Ward of Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital.

Collecting and donating toys for children is a gesture of goodwill that the US Marines customarily perform at holiday times as part of a worldwide charitable program called "Toys for Tots.

Since 1947, Marines stationed all over the world have been forging ties with local communities through volunteerism, such as the annual "Toys for Tots" program. The toys for this year's program were donated by students and faculty members at the American School of Kuwait and employees and family members of the US Embassy, as well as individual American contractors working in Kuwait.

It is a privilege for the Marine Security Guard Detachment here in Kuwait to continue that time honored tradition. The Marines welcome this opportunity to give back to a community that has demonstrated such goodwill towards them," said Gunnery Sergeant Joshua Hillbrand, Commander of Marine Security Guard Detachment at the US Embassy in Kuwait.

Representatives from the Marines were received by Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital Director Dr Ahmad Al-Awadi and Chief of Pediatrics Dr Yousef Al-Habib, along with numerous representatives from the hospital's social work and public relations departments. They then spent the morning distributing gifts and talking with the children in the hospital's pediatric ward, as they opened and enjoyed their new toys.
