LEE COUNTY, Fla. - A former Lee County Sheriff's deputy falls victim to a home burglary while away for military training.

The man left the agency a year ago to serve full time with the Marines.

A friend, who is also a deputy, was checking in on the home this week when he discovered someone broke into the house.

"It's not fair because he's away doing something good," said neighbor, Ashely Peterson.

Peterson just returned from Army boot-camp and can easily sympathize with what the Marine must be feeling right now.

"He couldn't have done anything to prevent it. It's really bad that he's trying to help out our country and someone is going to take advantage of him," said Peterson.

The Marine is not alone. Recent numbers from the Lee County Sheriff's Office show a 16 percent increase in home burglaries compared to the same time last year.

On Monday, WINK News spoke to several Bonita Springs homeowners who were taken advantage of by burglars in broad daylight.

Melissa Jones told us, "What they take from you is strictly your security, that's what they strip you from."

In both the Jones and Marine's break-ins, the burglars broke out a window to get inside.

Jones said she thought she was doing everything right as far as security. But, locks on every door would not stop the burglars from getting inside her house.

The Sheriff's Office says there is a way you can protect the windows of your home.

"You can put a window film on it, which is a tough thing,' explained Kevin Farrell with LCSO's Crime Prevention Unit, "You can break the glass but you have to cut through the film itself."

Still. Peterson's neighbor's misfortune is serving as a tough reminder for as she prepares to leave again with the Army. "When you're away, you're always wondering if everything is OK," said Peterson.
