Marine hero honored with street renaming
by Liz Rhoades , Managing Editor

Called “a son of Flushing,” the memory of Marine Corp. Julian Ramon will live on with a street named after him where he grew up.
Ramon, 22, was killed in Iraq in 2006 in Al Anbar Province when a land mine exploded. He was serving his second tour of duty in Iraq with the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division out of Camp Lejeune, N.C. He had two months left to serve overseas.
At the street renaming ceremony on Saturday at 45th Avenue at Kissena Boulevard, Councilman John Liu said, “He is indeed a son of Flushing. Honoring Corp. Ramon and his family in this way for his ultimate sacrifice will help the community properly grieve, memorialize and heal.”
Also speaking at the event was Dorothy Oxendine, a Gold Star Mother group past president. Family, friends and neighbors joined in the street renaming ceremony.
Ramon, who lived with his family on 45th Avenue, became a field radio operator after he joined the Marines in 2003. He had received numerous awards including the Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.
His grieving brother, Sebastian, said at the time of Julian’s death that he joined the Marines because he thought it would make him a better man.
The oldest of three brothers, Julian Ramon was a graduate of John Bowne High School. After graduating, he worked at a Wendy’s restaurant and later at an Off-Track Betting parlor before enlisting in the Marines.
“He needed money for college and eventually wanted to study criminal justice,” Sebastian Ramon said.
Julian Ramon is also survived by his parents, Luis and Yolanda Ramon, and another brother, Juan David.
