Toys for Tots Marines come to aid of car crash victim

When you're involved in a car accident, you would probably expect passing motorists, or the police, to be first on the scene.

Not the Marines.

But two Marines working at KARE 11's Toys for Tots tent dropped their toys and raced out onto Highway 55 Thursday morning to help a motorist who rolled his SUV on the highway.

Lance Corporal Mark Stickney and Sgt. Jesse Gerhard were loading a truck with toys and taking gifts from several motorists in the KARE 11 frontyard, which is located right along Highway 55.

They saw a driver in the eastbound lanes of 55 hit his brakes, lose control, rollover, and wind up on his side in the westbound lanes. Both ran to help.

"We had to throw a bunch of the toys down, saw the guy roll over, so we both ran down there to try to get this guy out of his car," said Sgt. Jesse Gerhard.

They pulled the man out of his smashed out windshield, and checked him over until paramedics arrived.

"I just saw it and instantly knew somebody had to do something about it," siad Lance Corporal Stickney. "Somebody on the road may not stop, so we figured we would run down there, it would be quicker than most people, so we just went down there and took care of the job."

The man seemed shaken, but unhurt.

It's unclear what caused the accident.
