CHARLESTON -- The hospital is hardly a place anyone wants to spend the holidays but it's especially difficult for children.

That's why marines were busy this morning bringing toys and smiles to Charleston Area Medical Center's Women's and Children's Hospital.

The pediatric patients received age-appropriate gifts of their very own. Parents we spoke with say the gesture makes a trying time a little easier.

"It does in a way because it distracts her from the illness itself but she deals with it in her own little way. She's very strong, very independent," said Brandy Smith, an Alum Creek resident who's 3-year-old daughter Makala is being treated for leukemia.

The toys came from donations like yours during this year's Toys-for-Tots Drive.
