FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) – A Marine from Forsyth County faces major rehabilitation after being shot in a friendly-fire incident near the Iraq-Syria border.

Sgt. Tim Brunstetter, 22, was hit Wednesday, according to his father, Forsyth County state senator Pete Brunstetter.

"Tim actually called us with a satellite phone from Mosul - he had come out of surgery and called to let us know he'd been hit," said his father.

Brunstetter served in the Navy and all three of his sons are Marines. Tim, an infantry Sgt. and Dan, a second Lieutenant, are both currently serving in Iraq.

"He was hit from just a few feet away with an M-16 that went through both ankles," said his father. "(It) caused some damage in the left ankle and passed clean through the right ankle."

Tim was taken to Germany to begin recovery. His father is uncertain where Tim's rehabilitation will take place. He said one thing for certain, his son is not where he wants to be.

"Tim is very upset about leaving Iraq because he wants to be there with his men," said Brunstetter. "He wants to finish his mission. He feels very strong about that."
