Express mail cutoff for Christmas delivery looms

There’s still time to mail gifts back to the States by Christmas — for a few extra bucks.

Thursday is the express mail cutoff for most U.S. servicemembers stationed in Europe.

Of course, gifts can be mailed after Thursday’s deadline, but there’s no guarantee they’ll reach stateside addresses by Dec. 25, according to U.S. military postal officials in Germany.

The recommended mailing deadline for priority mail and first-class letters was last Thursday.

Many U.S. military post offices in Germany plan to be open extra hours in the days leading up to Christmas.

The north side post office at Ramstein Air Base will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for mailing and pickup, and on Dec. 24, the pickup window will be open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

At Spangdahlem Air Base, the pickup window will stay open until 10 p.m. on Dec. 23, and until 8 p.m. on Dec. 24.

Customers should check with their local post office for hours.
