5/10 rededicates colors, reflect lineage

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — 5th Battalion, 10 Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, recalled heroic acts of Marines with a colors rededication ceremony here, Dec. 11.
The battle streamers that garnish a unit’s organizational colors represent the ancestry each Marine inherits by joining the unit. The threads of each multicolored fabric strip have a story of their own and can unravel the deeds of past and present heroes.
“Today is an opportunity to recognize our battalion’s lineage and honor the Marines and sailors who served before us as we prepare for our next combat deployment.” said Lt. Col. Chris Naler, the battalion commanding officer.
During the ceremony, two new battle streamers joined the nine already attained for service during World War II, the Cuban Missile Crisis and Operation Iraqi Freedom, to name a few. As members of the unit attached the streamers, the narrator explained the significance of each.
“This allows our young Marines and sailors to learn about their legacy,” said Col. Douglas Thomas, 10th Marines regimental commander. “I know we have a very dedicated group of young men and women carrying on that legacy.”
The new streamers are the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary streamer for their deployment to Ramadi, Iraq in 2005 as provisional infantry, and the Iraqi Campaign streamer with one bronze star for actions involving civil affairs operations.
“The Steel Rain Battalion” stood up Jan. 1, 1941, in the midst of World War II. As the unit’s legacy carries on, Marines will pass down the tradition of rededicating the colors as they continue to fight the good fight.
