ARETHA FRANKLIN HEADLINES BENEFIT CONCERT FOR TROOPS: Sunday, the ‘Queen of Soul’ performs in New York City for our military enlistees.

On Sunday, December 14, NewYork.com and Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Coast Guard and Airmen's Club Inc. are presenting Aretha Franklin, live and in concert at the Nokia Theatre in the capital of the entertainment world - Times Square, New York City for The Torch of Freedom: A Holiday Tribute to our Troops.


Known as the "Queen of Soul," Franklin was recently named the #1 singer of all time by Rolling Stone magazine and will be performing songs from her first-ever Christmas album, “This Christmas Aretha,” released via DMI Records.


"We're so excited to have Aretha, one of the world's most iconic performers in Times Square one of the world's most iconic settings during this holiday shopping season," says Brett Pulley, CEO of NewYork.com. "To be able to honor Ms. Franklin with our troops and support the Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Coast Guard and Airmen's Club is what these holidays should be about."


For nearly 90 years, the club (Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Coast Guard and Airmen’s Club, Inc.) has been operating continuously offering a “Home Away From Home” to all service personnel, military retirees, veterans and their dependents and sponsored guests. Since 1919 they have provided accommodations for millions of eligible guests and their familiars. The Solders’, Sailors’, Marines’, Coast Guard and Airmen’s Club us a 501 (c) 3, Non-profit organization funded by private citizens.


Aretha Franklin, known around the world for her first name, has achieved global recognition on an unprecedented scale. Also known as the “Queen of Soul,” she is one of the most influential and important voices in the history of Pop music. In the fall of 2008 Rolling Stone magazine named Franklin the #1 vocalist of all time.


Her distinctive, soulful voice has graced music charts for over four decades and her live performances have touched the hearts of tens of millions since she began her musical journey in Detroit as a singing child prodigy. Aretha has earned countless international and national awards such as the Presidential Medal of Freedom, a Kennedy Center Honor; the American National Medal of the Arts Award, 18 Grammy Awards, a Grammy Legend Award, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and five American Music Awards. In 1987 she became the first woman inducted into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame and in 1979 she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
