Senator Boxer,
My name is Maria Blythe. I am the wife of a United States Marine who will be stationed in California this month. We have been paying CLOSE attention to the things going on in the state and with the auto industry. I have to say that I am extremely disappointed in the lack of continuity and depth of your speech. I happened to live in Alabama when the Toyota and Mercedes Benz plants came to the south. I must say that there were no outright tax incentives made. The "incentives" you spoke about gave the appearance that the states actually provided cash to the businesses which IS NOT TRUE. The truth is, Alabama's tax incentive was that in order to bring jobs to the state, Alabama would not charge Mercedes Benz taxes of the amount you specified in your speech.
I am also very disappointed at the lack of foresight you are giving the people of your state and the American people. We elect legislators such as yourself, in order to speak FOR us, because we believe that the few can represent the many with the FORESIGHT and wisdom of our forefathers. You should be ashamed of yourself for not knowing how this bail out will effect the future decisions of businessmen and women who practice poor business ethics and structure their companies solely on their own greed instead of focusing on creating a profit for themselves and bettering the lives of the people they employ.
The poor decisions of the US automaker industry falls on themselves. We have to, as a community, understand that personal responsibility is something that each individual must deal with. Why reward the same people who got themselves in this mess with money they have already stated they do not know if they can pay back? The nature of a capitalist economy is that when someone fails, there's someone waiting in the wings to compete and take over. THAT is what should happen. Jobs will be created if things are done properly. Not lost. The only people who would lose jobs are the people that allowed this crisis in their own industry to happen in the first place.
I hope to GOD that you get this eventually. This is the same thought process that tells children today that competing is not important. It's ok to be a slacker because our Government will bail us out.
Everyone on LN, please pray for us for our PCS to California. I think I'm going to lose my mind.
