At holiday season, public asked not to forget military's sacrifices
Officials from the Civil Air Patrol's Michigan Wing gathered at the Capitol Monday to help kick off the upcoming Wreaths Across America effort.
Wreaths Across America is a national effort to lay more than 100,000 wreaths honoring the five branches of the U.S. military, as well as the Merchant Marines and the POW-MIA Association, each year. This year's event will be observed nationally on Saturday.
The program - now active in all 50 states - began more than 15 years ago when a Maine-based wreath company began a tradition of placing wreaths on the headstones at Arlington National Cemetery during the holidays.
