Marines help me out here.my son is stationed in 29 palms.he has 9 days of leave, but he was told, he now only could use 4 of them because emergency reasons.travel to the east coast would take 2 days so two days home wouldnt be worth it.is this standard op?

Sorry 'bout the needs of the Corps, but it happens. I spent 2 Christmasses away outta 4. Don't let her get too ticked off,, plan a great time when he Can get away.

Out of 16 years I spent 10 Christmases,New Years and Thanksgivings away from home.

I don't know what the current SITREP is or how much longer the young Marine has in the Marine Corps but they do want you to try to keep leave on the books for emergency.

And as Sgt. Sparkie said the needs of the Marine Corps. If there is a deployment coming up they be having block leave to get ready to deploy.

If it is "critical" that he come home....he can request mast through his chain of command. And yes even though a Marine earns 2.5 days or whatever it is now in a month.....it is sort of like the civilian vacation you take it when the boss says you can.

Wishing him luck!

Will the local recruiters be willing to bring him home for Recruiter's Assistance? Possibly 30 days of him being home for free. This is sometimes the best deal for everyone: Gives the Marine a chance to catch up on leave accrual, as well as provide fresh combat experience (and 2/7 has that in spades now) to the local recruiters and poolees....

wow. I really just shot my mouth off again without asking enough questions. Nothing new there. Did your Marine just return with 2/7? If not, the answer is different.

Thanks for replies guys.
paid, no he is with 3/4 and his first deployment is not until june +-
i do understand the needs of the CORPS comes first.but why would they tell him to get his tickets and then tell him he only has four out nine days?
his mother will be fine she understands just dissapointed, thats her baby even if he is a Marine.lol
realy this is all trivial there are lots of Marines in much worse places than 29 palms for the holidays

god bless them all and you all too for your past sacrifices

There does seem to be some kind of breakdown. His team/squad leaders should have had him check with the command for guidance on leave before allowing him to buy tickets. Getting leave approved online (MOL) is also kind of necessary as it allows the Marine to plan his travel, as well as allow the command to begin forecasting the manpower for the holidays (drawing up duty rosters, etc.)

At any rate, whether or not this happened, in the long run you and your Marine will probably appreciate this policy (if not the clumsy execution of it). Next summer he will have more time available for leave, unless of course he takes that Recruiter's Assistance or some other form of PTAD. Good luck to you all.

DP ~ Sounds like your son got relegated to a "96" hour pass. Saw Blake on one over Christmas last year. Semper Gumby rules apply. Toss a coin. But, I'd bet on a pre-dep later to see him for sure after Mojave Viper. Let the 96 ride for him and his buddies to enjoy some brotherhood experiences.

MPMOM ~ My heart goes out to you, ma'am. Our Marine is just back from deployment, and I realise how lucky we are to have him home after reading your post. The timing was good this year. God bless.

Often times units maintain a skeleton crew over the holidays and only allow less than half of the Marines to take leave at any one time. Everyone gets a chance to take leave but not necessarilly the days or amount that they want. Generally you can not go in the hole on your leave balance unless it is emergency leave.

I was twice forced to take 30 days of leave when I didn't want to. Both times was the entire month of September. My balance was 90 days and everything over 60 disappears on October 1st. Anyway.... tell your son to suck it up, stock up and come home later on for 2 weeks instead of just 2 days.

My son hasn't even reported yet and know I'm thinking this could be the last Christmas I spend with him for a while.
It is what it is, others have sacrificed more.
Happy Holidays to all. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/8/8_2_108.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZN)

My son arrived home this past Saturday and doesn't have to return until the 5th of January. I'm savoring my time with him this year since he will be deployed next Christmas. I hope everyone enjoys the time they get with their son's and daugther's.
Happy Holidays!
