The Boston Bruins [team stats] are rushing up the ice toward the Toys for Tots net with a plan that calls for toy collections at every home game from Monday through Christmas.

The Marine Corps charity drive was checked into the boards by the economy, with requests for toys up and donations down, leaving the bins empty in the charity’s South Boston warehouse. The Bruins are one of several local organizations that have stepped up.

“It’s a simple way to make such a profound impact,” said Kelly Ward, the wife of Bruins defenseman Aaron Ward, who is helping spearhead the team’s donation effort this year. “You can spend $5 or $10 and make a magical memory instead of a miserable one.”

Ward and other Bruins wives will staff donation boxes during the team’s Dec. 13 game against the Thrashers. For each unwrapped toy donated at that game, a fan will receive a raffle ticket and a chance to win an autographed team jersey, autographed novelty sign or autographed hockey stick.

Marine Sgt. Daniel Sampson said since Monday, the Boston office of Toys for Tots has taken in scores of toys and more than $10,000 in donations. He said much more is needed to meet the demand, but he said Bruins fans have stepped up to help needy kids in the past.

“We’ve worked with the Bruins last year,” Sampson said. “It was really good they took care of the Marines. . . . Bruins fans were good.”

This past week, 2,000 gifts were donated at toy drives held at the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company and the Massachusetts Credit Union League Association. The Boston Housing Authority said it has collected $10,000 that it will present to Toys for Tots, raised through employee and union donations and from fees that filmmakers paid to shoot on BHA property.
