I think I've gotten a hernia. I was diagnosed by my P.E. coach and I'm going to the doctor tomorrow. I haven't told my recruiter yet because I don't know if I have one or not. Will this cause me to be kicked out of the DEP or not? My ship date is not until July 20 so I have time to recover.

I had a hernia years ago. Recovered in about 2 weeks or so. But you will still have the stitches for about a month. So i'd assume you'd be good to go. It is a surgery though.. But mine was so long ago I didn't have to tell MEPS.

A PE Coach with a medical degree? See a real doctor and then tell your recruiter the results.

Yeah I know he's not in the position to tell me whats wrong, but on the other hand I do have a painful bulge in my lower abdomen and hurts really bad when I pick up something.

I'm not going to tell my recruiter about it until I know for sure, which will be tomorrow. Until then I'm curious/ worried if this will affect my status in the DEP. Will it? Like I said I have time to recover, but will I have to go through any extra process to stay in the DEP or will the discharge me?

COFields,
When/ if you ever graduate from boot camp you can claim the title Marine. Until then you are just a poolie/ wannabe. If you ever disrespect a Corporal like that in a fleet unit you will have a mudhole stomped in your ass.

Sound All Clear!

If you do have temporary medical problems you will not be kicked out of DEP. Adjusting your ship date may be in order. See a doctor and tell your Recruiter what is going on.

Never had a hernia, but I recently sustained an injury while in the DEP as well. As the Corporal (yellowwing) said, you won't be kicked out of the DEP (unless it is, you know, potentially disqualifying, but I doubt that and hope it is not). (S)he'll tell you so get whatever treatment you need to get it fixed to continue training, most likely. (S)he'll probably discourage use of medications unless it is absolutely necessary, which it probably will be. Good luck with that, man, I truly hope you make it and I'd be interested in how you're holding up later on.

If in fact it is a diagnosed hernia by a "certified" doctor or medical facility and even with or without surgery you should get ALL the documentation so your recruiter can send this with your package to MEPS. To see if a waiver is required.

An inguinal hernia should be a easy recovery. Although you will want to avoid certain lifting and exercises to give it time to heal fully.

Since your ship date is 07/09 you should if a minor thing be able to recover and proceed. Just make sure that ANY and ALL medical AND/OR legal problems are documented.<!-- / message -->

I just noticed on your profile that an interest is lifing weights. That is good for training and strength. But if you are going to lift with free weights or machine. Insure that you have the proper technique and you are not trying to atlas the weights before your time.

You could potentially hurt yourself worse and if you do have a hernia this could have have possibly been a factor in getting hurt.

What is the verdict? Do you or do you not have a hernia?
