In addition to performing his duties at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, Spencer has helped Whale Branch middle-schoolers learn to play football, assisted the Battery Creek High School Junior ROTC and volunteers with the Beaufort Water Search and Rescue Squadron, aiding distressed people on Beaufort County waters.
Wednesday afternoon, the Beaufort Rotary Club honored Spencer as the overall 2003 Military Person of the Year.
"It was a very big surprise," Spencer said. "Until Monday I didn't even know I was nominated. I was very surprised and overwhelmed."
