Military officials are trying to figure out why a 22-year-old Marine now held in the Camp Pendleton brig is suspected of shooting and wounding a fellow Marine as their unit prepared to return from the Middle East.

Marine Cpl. Jose Miergrimado of the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion remained in military custody Wednesday as officials continued to investigate the May 25 incident, a base spokeswoman confirmed.

Vehicle crewman Steven Eichenberger was recovering at Bethesda Naval Medical Center in Maryland, Marine Capt. Lara Bennett said. Eichenberger reportedly was shot in the left side of the neck with an M-16.

The incident took place during a football game at Camp Grizzly, a Marine base in northern Kuwait. It reportedly was sparked by a confrontation between the two Marines over a dirty sleeping bag and keys to an armored vehicle, Bennett confirmed in a telephone interview.

Miergrimado is suspected of going to his tent, loading a round into his M-16 rifle and returning to the field, where the shooting took place, Bennett said.
