Some folks in our area decided to start their holiday season by hitting the ice. For just one night, the rink at Wachovia arena belonged to skaters.

"I'm just here to skate. And watch her try not to fall," laughed Brendan Armitag.

The once-a-year public skate is for people of all skill levels, and for some, it's a pretty good workout.

The rare opportunity brought people to the arena near Wilkes-Barre to enjoy themselves, but it also brought in something else - something crucial to this holiday season. It's all for the U.S. Marines Toys for Tots program.

"It's all about the kids. The more kids come out, the more toys we get, they more they buy popcorn, the more we get," said Sergeant Moore of the United States Marines.

Admission to the free skate was one unwrapped toy, or a small cash donation for needy children in our area.

"It means so much, not only because there are parents out here, but because there are kids out here who want to help other kids," added Sgt. Moore.

And those kids seem to know that their skating is in the spirit of giving.

"It's fun, it's good, it gives the children something to do, and everyone gets some things for Christmas. That's what counts," added Armitag.

WNEP is a proud sponsor of the toys for tots campaign.
