Why We Gather

I now know why men who have been to war yearn to reunite.
Not to tell stories or look at old pictures. Not to laugh or weep.
Comrades gather because they long to be with the men who once
acted their best, men who suffered and and sacrificed, who were
stripped raw, right down to their humanity.

I did not pick these men; fate and the Marine Corps delivered
them. But I know them in a way I know no other men.
I have never given anyone such trust. They were wiling to guard
something more precious than my life. They would have carried my
reputation, the memory of me. It was part of the bargan we all made,
the reason we were all willing to die for on another.:flag:

"It was part of the bargan we all made" But the bargan was never said to each other in words, it was just understood. A contract, a commitment or
pledge, We take care of each other.

Awesome post Blooper. That is what makes Marines a brotherhood. Knowing any Marine from any MOS, in a tight situation, you know that he/she will have your back.

Outstanding post Phantom Blooper!

I've been out of the Corps since Jan 82 and have never enjoyed anywhere near the same comradeship among co-workers & friends as I did in the Corps.

This is what I miss most, after having separated from active duty.

Fortunately three of my closest friends are Marines that I served with.

I copied bloopers post and sent it to my step-son, three and a half tours, 3 purple heart SSgt in the Army. This also fits men like him. He had to take Medical retirement from the Army because of his Afgan injuries, but is attending college now in hopes of going back in as an Officer. He may not be a Marine, but I am humbled by his dedication, and scrifices. He is a hero to me. SF

I've been out since 78 and I still miss the kinship. Cannot find any of my old friends, and it sometimes makes me feel lost. The Marines gave me direction, and purpose. Haven't had that since. I come here because I know all of you, and I, can understand each other.

Phantom,
It has been chronicled through out the years that one fights not only for the mission given but also, more importantly, for his comrades to the left and right of him. Your words have solidified what I have read and heard through conversation and I am much obliged for you writing them.

The US Marine Corps, a very close knit unit. In part because we are the smallest branch of the US Armed services.

I am proud to be a part of the vey best, the toughest and bravest men and women on this planet or any other:usmc:
