Exercise class benefits military families

About 50 women and two men gathered at 9 a.m. Thursday to "huff and puff before we stuff."

Nancy Duncan, the owner of Salem Jazzercise, rallied her troops for a pre-Thanksgiving-feast workout at the Anderson Readiness Center on State Street.

It is the second year she has organized the charity event. This year, tickets were $5 or the equivalent in a toy or nonperishable food.

All proceeds went to the nonprofit Operation Homefront, which will give them to needy military families, Duncan said.

"Whether you're here in favor or not of the troops being in Iraq, they need our support," Duncan told the crowd. "And that's why we're here today."

Duncan teaches Jazzercise classes at the building every week. She was looking for someone to benefit from the event, and she chose Oregon Homefront because of her location.

"It gets back to the building we're in," Duncan said. "We have a relationship with these people. This is a wonderful community that cares about others and working out."

Attendance at Thursday's class was an even split between regular class members and those who came only for the day.

Debbie Aguinaga of Salem got turned on to Jazzercise by her son, a member of the Air Guard stationed at the Readiness Center. Her other son is in the Marines and stationed in Okinawa, Japan.

"My main reason for being here is to support them," Aguinaga said.

Instructors, Duncan, Terre Banks and Rebecca Rabe led the group through a "super session" of 75 minutes of aerobics, cardiovascular exercise, stretching and weight work.

"We're prompting them to get ready for pumpkin pie," Banks said during the class.

Duncan estimated the workout session could burn, depending on how hard each individual worked, 300 to 500 calories.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Nutrient Database, that's equal to a 1/8 portion of a 9-inch homemade pumpkin pie.
