Marines offer themselves for charity

What's the best part about being a Marine?

Is it the honor of serving your country? Perhaps it has something to do with being a part of something bigger than yourself.

Or maybe it's the fact that women find you completely irresistible. In fact, some women are so infatuated with Marines, they are actually willing to pony up the dough to go out with one.

Tonight at Pocono Brewing Company in Swiftwater, fervent, single women will bid on a dozen of our nation's heroes while helping out a great cause.

The highest bidder gets the privilege of going out on a date with a local Marine auctioned off by Gary in the Morning. All proceeds from the event will go to benefit Toys for Tots of Monroe County.

The show starts at 9 p.m. Local musician Christian Porter will provide the entertainment.

At a starting bid of $25, women will compete for the chance to have a dinner for two with one of 12 young soldiers.

But it's not all about the ladies though. Men will also have a chance to bid on one female Marine as well.

Where things go after that is up to the happy couple.

"Who knows, maybe it'll be true love," said John Dickson, director of Monroe County's Toys for Tots. "It's always possible they'll get married and have kids."

So what is it about Marines that make them good matches, let alone marriage material? Surely there's more to it than just the uniform.

Lance Cpl. Shawn Olsen believes it may have something to do with the vibe a Marine gives off.

"Marines are usually confident without being arrogant," the 24-year old recruit said, "I think women are attracted to that. I mean, when you look at a Marine's face you can tell that there's a lot of pride there. The uniform doesn't hurt either."

Staff Sgt. Thomas Hayden believes women's interest is part physical and part intellectual.

"When a Marine goes out dressed in uniform, women typically have a lot of questions," the 28-year-old veteran said. "They want to know what you've done and where you've been. They seem to be attracted more to character."

Wherever this love of Marines stems from, they all agree that by virtue of being a Marine, women fall at their feet.
