VISTA: Two killed in crash believed to be Marines

By North County Times

VISTA ---- Two men who died in a fiery single car crash Saturday night are believed to be 20-year-old active-duty Marines from Vista, authorities said Sunday.

Personal items found at the crash and other information indicates the identity of the two crash victims, who were burned beyond recognition in the wreck on Hacienda Drive near Breeze Hill Road, according to the medical examiner's office. The office, along with Marine Corps officials, are working to confirm the men's identities.

About 8:30 p.m. Saturday, the two were travelling west on Hacienda Drive in a 1990 Dodge Shadow sedan, going about 60 mph, sheriff's deputy Honda Cannon said. Witnesses said that the car hit a center divider then, a little further up the road, slammed into a eucalyptus tree in the north shoulder, he said. The car caught fire on impact, and after Vista firefighters extinguished it, they found the burned bodies of the two men inside.

The crash may have been alcohol-related, Cannon said.
