MILITARY: Camp Pendleton Marine dies in Iraq

Gunnery Sgt. Marcelo R. Velasco, 40, died Wednesday in a nonhostile incident while serving in Iraq, the Department of Defense announced Friday.

Velasco was a Camp Pendleton Marine assigned to the I Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group.

Details of the incident were not available. It remains under investigation.

Velasco joined the Marine Corps on July 18, 1994. This was his second deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, according to a news release from the Marine Forces Reserve.

He was a motor vehicle operator, and was promoted to that rank on Nov. 1, 2005.

His personal decorations include: the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (second award), Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal, National Defense Service Medal (second award), Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (third award), Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon (third award) and Marine Security Guard Ribbon.
