Local colleges reach out to Pendleton

Camp Pendleton Marines and Sailors took the opportunity to meet with more than 40 colleges and universities at the Mainside Exchange area, Aug. 15.
The Lifelong Learning Branch of Marine and Family Services put together its Fourth Annual Education Expo for service members and their families to give information about furthering their education.“The Education Expo gives our active-duty Marines, Sailors, and their spouses the opportunity to speak one-on-one with a variety of schools,” said Pat Jeffress, educational services officer and branch manager of Lifelong Learning. “They can learn about more than just the seven schools here on base.”

Booths for colleges and universities from around the country lined the walkways, ready to provide service members with information. The booths were full of fliers, pamphlets, contact cards, free gifts and eager representatives of the schools.

In addition to the schools giving information, the Joint Education Center explained tuition assistance and the new G.I. Bill to inquiring Marines.
“Education is extremely important for today’s military,” Jeffress explained. “The brightest and the best should continue to learn because technology changes so fast.

The attendees also had the opportunity to win one of three laptops, six MP3 players, or 10 gift certificates in a raffle by the JEC.
Service members who missed the event can always visit one of the three Joint Education Centers on base at Mainside, the School of Infantry or the South Mesa Branch Library for more information about continuing education, Jeffress said.

The JEC helps service members learn how they can receive tuition assistance, how they can use their G.I. Bill, take the necessary tests to begin school, and has counselors available to answer their questions about continuing education, she explained.

In addition to being useful for service members, the JEC also helps military spouses, retirees and veterans to get the information they need to continue their education.

“If service members use our resources, then they have nothing to lose when it comes to exploring options for education,” Jeffress said.
For more information about how the JEC can help with continued education, appointments can be made at (760) 725-6660/6414.
