Veterans from Iraq sought to participate in health survey

01:00 AM EST on Tuesday, November 18, 2008

Veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom are asked to participate in a health survey conducted on behalf of the Rhode Island Gulf War Information and Relief Commission, an independent body created by state law.

The commission’s objective is to identify the medical, administrative and social needs of the Rhode Island veterans of those conflicts to ensure that they receive all pertinent information they are entitled to.

A survey is being mailed to all veterans listed in the commission’s registry of OIF/OEF veterans. Questions focus on personal health, family, deployments since the beginning of OIF/OEF and experiences with receiving health and social services from health care systems. Responses will assist the commission in formulating recommendations to Gary Alexander, director of the Department of Human Services, about how to improve programs and services for Rhode Island veterans.

All data will be confidential and will be processed and analyzed by Brown University personnel and presented only in summary form. Surveys can also be completed online at www.chcr.brown.edu/gulf by using the username and password given to you in the survey letter.

For questions or problems logging onto the survey, call Hailee Dunn at (401) 863-3490. All other survey questions should be directed to Dr. Melissa Clark at (401) 863-3170.

Urology seminars continue

The VA Medical Center at 830 Chalkstone Ave. in Providence will conduct the next in a series of educational seminars on a variety of urology topics on Nov. 26, with a discussion of prostate cancer. Eileen Kirshenbaum, a certified urology registered nurse, will lead the one-hour session, which is set for 9 a.m. in the fifth-floor auditorium.

Other topics in the series include bladder cancer, on Jan. 28; penile and testicular cancer, on March 25; incontinence and overactive bladder, on May 27, and kidney stones, on July 22. For more information or to register for seminars, call (401) 273-7100, ext. 2926.

Hendricken plans tribute

Bishop Hendricken High School, in Warwick, will hold a memorial program at 7 p.m. on Dec. 2, in the school theater, to honor Rhode Islanders killed in Vietnam and the Rhode Island Marines who perished in the1983 terrorist bombing of their barracks in Beirut, Lebanon.

Hendricken teacher Joe Cichon Jr., who has enhanced the knowledge of his students with his Vietnam War experience class and exposed them to a personal look at the Rhode Island soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice during that conflict, has planned this program to remember the 239 Rhode Islanders who died in Vietnam and the 9 Rhode Island Marines killed in the Beirut bombing.

Thomas W. O’Connell, assistant defense secretary from 2003 to 2007 under Donald Rumsfeld, will be the keynote speaker. O’Connell, a retired Army colonel and a Vietnam War veteran, is a former Jamestown resident and a 1968 University of Rhode Island graduate.

Friends and family of those being honored are invited to attend and should call Jan O’Donnell at (401) 739-3450 by Nov. 26 to confirm attendance.

The Marines killed in Beirut were Cpl. Stephen Spencer, of Portsmouth; Sgt. Rick Crudale, of West Warwick; Cpl. David Massa, of Warren; Cpl. James Silva, of Middletown; Lance Cpl. Edward Soares Jr., of Tiverton; PFC Thomas Julian, of Portsmouth; Lance Cpl. Edward Iacovino, of Warwick; Sgt. Timothy Giblin, of Providence; and Lance Cpl. Thomas Shipp, of Woonsocket.

Holiday gifts for the troops

The public is invited to join American Legion Post 18 and BankNewport in remembering Rhode Island men and women in military service who are far from home this holiday season. BankNewport will host a Warming Hearts Holiday Collection Drive, Dec. 1 through Jan. 3, at all of its branches in Newport, Bristol and South counties.

A complete list of the items needed and collection receptacles will be displayed at all BankNewport locations during the drive. Donated items must be in original packaging and packages will be mailed in mid-January. Family members from Newport, Bristol and South counties should register their family’s deployed service member to ensure he or she receives a holiday package.

Packages may include the following items: hand-made or store-bought cards; individually packaged snacks but no chocolate; toiletries, preferably in travel size; puzzle books and playing cards; paperbacks and magazines; writing paper, envelopes, pens; music CDs and movie DVDs; coffee, tea, powdered drink mix; spices, seasoning, hot sauce; sunblock and insect repellent, and white socks. Do not send religious items, pork products, aerosols or anything that will melt in high temperatures.

Korean War Memorial fundraising successful

Organizers of the recent, and last, memorial brick sale for the Korean War Memorial in downtown Providence report they sold more than they had expected. Due to the efforts of Crosstown Press’s free printing and Loffredo’s Monumental Décor’s engraving and installation of all bricks inexpensively, the Korean War Walkway and Memorial will beautify the area and beckon visitors to remember “The Forgotten War.”

Singled out for praise in the campaign’s success were The Providence Journal’s Mark Patinkin and the Narragansett Times’ Michael Souza, and Greg Butler, of Butler’s Landscaping, who is and will continue to be responsible for maintaining the area. Donations from all sources also helped the campaign achieve its fundraising goal, especially those from Jung Kang Lee and Prof. Bongsup Cho of the Korean American Association of Rhode Island.

Questions about the memorial or its upkeep can be directed to Ted Low, at (401) 521-5660; Lew Weinstein, at (401) 837-9441, or Arthur Bergel, at (401) 451-8281.
