How could I forget? And I wasn't kidding. As old as we are, it's nice to have retained most parts.

Wow, that's interesting. I have no idea what my rifle serial number was. I don't even remember having to memorize it.

It was quite a long time ago, but I can remember many other details about boot camp, but nothing about even having to memorize my rifle serial number.

Maybe my senior thought that was stupid and didn't have us do it. Or maybe I thought it was stupid and chose to forget - no that couldn't be it, 'cause I can remember a lot of stupid ****.

We were isued an M-14 when we hit MCRD San Diego on 1 may'66, and turned it in when we Graduated on 2 July'66, wasn't required to memorize the #. After school and the Fleet,Recieved another one when I hit Danang and assigned to VMF(AW)235, 'the Death Angels', on 1 Feb.'68, as Plane Capt. Turned that one in when we were disbanded and gave our Aircraft to the Navy in June '68. Went to Iwakuni and de-moth balled 23 F-8 C's and had 28 days to get them Combat ready in Naha, Okinawa for the Navy. Went back to Chu-Lai H&MS-13(the engine shop was full of Mech's), and so sent to the Army 23rd Americal MP CO. Wasn't required to memorize the M-60's #, I had as Lead Jeep Gunner on Convoys. Then after Cubi Pt engine shop CER, extended for Choppers. Never had an issued weapon after 235.( Did have a .45 when an MP, and a .38 when Flying). Had 6 Med-evaced M-16's on my Birds. One double clipped at the Cabin Hatch, 3 in my Cruse Box double clipped, and one double clipped on each side of the ramp, on each of my 5-H-46's. 3 sets of 50-Cals, one on #11, one #13, and was on my 3rd #14 when Med-evaced. We were told when we 1st hit the yellow foot-prints not to get attached to anything except our Brother's, and told to listen to every word as we would NOT be told but One time, and each one of us regardless of MOS was going to Vietnam, and not one of us messed around after that. We only had 8 weeks to get it, or they said simply-'Die". All except 4, out of 76 that Graduated, came home alive. Over half were phically wounded, but we stayed alive. The only serial numbers that mattered, was the Aircraft Bu-weps Numbers we had as Plane Capt's, and CrewChiefs. My serial number was 225****. We were required to KNOW that one.

I don't remember my rifle's serial # anymore, but I sure-as-hell knew it good in boot. However, my combo lock's combination is SEARED into my brain, so much so that, 34 years later, I sometimes automatically dial it up when i go to open a combo lock, like at my work locker. 0-22-0. And, I still have my long-shank rifle lock, and I can still open it in .23-sec.!
