The generosity last year of New Bern and Craven County residents sent more than 100 wounded Marines and soldiers home for the holidays. The same number will go home again, but without the need of more contributions.

Steve Tyson, community organizer for the Wounded Warrior Christmas Leave program, said the organization reached its $200,000 goal last year.

Tyson said wounded warriors from Camp Lejeune and soldiers at Womack Hospital at Ft. Bragg will again benefit from the money raised last year.

The money raised buys plane tickets for 66 Marines from Camp Lejeune and 50 soldiers from Ft. Bragg.

"The generosity came from other parts of the country, including as far away as Washington State," Tyson said.

Last December at the New Bern Golf and Country Club Marines from Camp Lejeune joined local donors. The Marines shared stories about their injuries and plans for the future.

"We hope and pray there will be no need for financial donations in 2009," Tyson said.
