OXFORD, Miss. — A 90-year-old Mississippi veteran received medals and decorations this week to replace those he earned in World War II but lost on his journey back to the U.S.

Robert Gardner of Oxford served almost four years in the Army, fighting on the front lines for 119 days. When he flew home in October 1945, the awards were packed inside his duffel bag but were stolen.

His granddaughter, Bridget Moore, contacted the Army, and officials recommissioned his medals and decorations. The items were put in a frame and presented to Gardner this week during a Veterans Day ceremony in Oxford.

Gardner enlisted in the Army the day before Pearl Harbor. He credits God for allowing him to survive the war. He worked as a carpenter after returning home.
