U.S. military unveils YouTube substitute ‘TroopTube’
Washington Business Journal - by Steven E.F. Brown Contributing Writer

The U.S. military, which has restricted use of popular video site YouTube by its personnel, now offers an approved alternative called “TroopTube.”

The beta site, at trooptube.tv, lets users sign up as a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or as a reservist, family member or civilian friend. They can then upload videos, which are checked by censors before being posted.

“Videos must fall within accepted boundaries of community standards and safety,” says a message on the Military OneSource web site describing TroopTube. Military OneSource operates the web pages on the TroopTube site. It is owned by Ceridian Corp. of Minneapolis.

Videos won’t be edited -- they just won’t be posted if rejected. No violent or obscene videos are allowed.

The site featured a “message to the troops” from Gen. David Petraeus and a “shout-out” to soldiers in the 3rd Brigade A Troop 133 Cavalry from their wives on Tuesday.

The Department of Defense cut off military personnel’s access to YouTube and other sites more than a year ago because of security worries, but also because of tremendous usage of bandwidth on its networks.

San Bruno, Calif.-based YouTube is owned by advertising and search giant Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG), based in Mountain View.
