Local Lutheran church honors service members

FREMONT -- For the past four years, members of St. Mark Lutheran Church have been honoring those who have served in the military.

On Sunday, during the 10:30 a.m. service at the church on East State Street, about 65 veterans were remembered.

Annette Moore, a branch committee chairwoman for the special veteran's service, read the names as about 30 church members gathered in front of the church to place an American flag in a black cauldron.

"We choose to honor our veterans, those serving and those who have yet to serve," Moore said. "As we honor them, let's not forget how privileged we are."

The flags that were placed in the cauldron were purchased for $2 each. The money goes toward a plaque that hangs in the church and lists more than 50 names of veterans.

"We continually add people's names," Moore said.

It's one of several ways these church goers pay tribute to those who chosen to protect fellow Americans.

The first stained glass window in the church is a dedication for four servicemen who were also members of the church. They are: Louis Kaiser, who served in the U.S. Navy, Russell Mook, who served in the U.S. Marines, Richard Topel, who served in the U.S. Army and Arlo Williamson, who served in the U.S. Navy.

Moore said the church's veteran service first took place in 2004 when the members celebrated St. Mark's 90th anniversary. A survey sent out to church members questioned what events they would like to have during the celebration. Members suggested the veteran's service.

"It's grown ever since," Moore said.

Mick Hill, a member of the church, said he served in the U.S. Marines for three years and traveled much around the world.

"I just think of all my friends who served, and some of those who didn't come back," Hill said.

But as for being a veteran, "It gives you a sense of pride," he said.
