Human remains are those of homeless man

Staff Report

Skeletal remains found in a wooded area of Deltona were identified Friday as those of a 58-year-old homeless man, officials said.

Jewelry and other personal items found with the bones Thursday helped determine the man was Carl Lynn Cappabianca, whose last-known permanent address was in DeLand. Deputies had an encounter with him in Deltona in April, and he was thought to be homeless then, spokesman Gary Davidson said.

While the cause of death hasn't been determined, investigators who've examined the remains -- about 75 percent of the skeleton, including the skull, found no indication of violence or trauma.

Family members said the man suffered from diabetes and several other serious medical conditions and left his home earlier this year after becoming estranged from his wife, Davidson said. He had not been reported missing, but investigators who recovered a ring with the U.S. Marines insignia checked with Volusia County's Veterans' Services Department and found someone who knew the man.
