Couldn't find much of anything here on Leatherneck or on Google...so I figured I'd ask the Marines.

I'm leaving for PI in a little under 2 weeks and although it's doubtful i'll be back for my girlfriends Prom. I'd like to know, just for general knowledge more than anything, is it appropriate/acceptable to wear dress blues at a prom? Are any service uniforms appropriate for an occasion like this? Thanks very much.

If you Graduate Boot Camp, then the answer is of course you can wear your Blues to the Prom, if you're at home during that time frame.

I agree to this statement in part.....If you graduate boot camp....... before you wear blues to a high school function check out the schools policy.

Some schools do not allow uniforms to graduations by students so there may also be a policy for this type of clothing at social functions.

Graduate boot camp first!

this isn't the guy i graduated with but i googled "Marine not allowed to wear dress blues" and there a TON of schools that are denying Marines and other service members the right to wear there uniforms to graduations. I don't know about prom though other than the guy i graduated with.

Your Susie will probably be with some other guy by that time anyway. After you graduate you will have bigger things on your mind than some stupid little high school prom. At least you should.........

Good luck at recruit training ;)

I see that scuttlebutt is alive and well and being perpetuated. You can wear your blues to a prom or a wedding or a funeral. You earned that right.

The stuff about a uniform to graduation being denied falls along the same lines as the CO designates the uniform of the day. Graduation the uniform of the day is cap and gown. You gonna go down the rappell tower in your blues or go to a wedding in cammies? How bout going to the boot camp graduation ceremony in PT gear?

Of course you can wear blues or alphas to the prom. Both are considered formal dress.

If you make it through recruit training, put on your best Rambo face and wear your uniform to the prom. Anyone gives you any guff, clean their clock.

If you make it on time, yes, but only the Dress Blue Bravo's (Ribbons/Badge), the Alpha's (Medals) are not authorized on leave unless approval of the CO. You'll learn this in the RTF at bootcamp.

This is a case of simply not waiting until it matters to ask the question. You'll learn all about uniform regulations at boot camp, so you would be in the know long before you escorted Suzie to the prom.

Suzie don't need no escort or new dress for the prom.

Sheeit, boy, she'll be out back rubbing up against all those whally tackers.

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate it and right now the only thing on my mind is getting through PI and earning the title. She has accepted the major backburner that means for her and I.

And her school is very okay with my wearing blues to prom I talked to the Superintendent.

Even if you graduate boot camp I believe the only person that has a set of Dress Blues right out of boot camp would be the platoon guide. Correct me if I'm wrong on this but that was the way it was two years ago when I went to my friends graduation at MCRDPI. I know in the past they have graduated series in Blues but I thought they did away with that a while ago.

Some things change, some don't. The Honor Marines get their blues free and wear them for graduation. The rest of them can order their blues and have them tailored during the training cycle so that they may be ready in time for their boot leave.

The blues were issued and tailored when I was there, I think we pay a reduced price on the blues, because I haven't seen a bill for over $300 for clothing yet.

Thanks for clarifying Sgt. V. I don't remember the DI's saying we could purchase our blues in boot when I went through, although if it meant more time away from their play time they wouldn't be for it.

Sgt, prom is usually after evening colors.

A glow strap is needed for those hours.

How you already talking about wearing uniforms and such when you have not even earned the Eagle Globe and Anchor that goes on it. You have to go threw 13 weeks of fun and excitement before you even think about putting Blues, Alphas, Deltas or Charles on. So before you start thinking of that think of the most important part, earning the Title United States Marine.

It seems the who "Issueing of Blues" thing, comes and goes........We were issued, and graduated in them in Feb of '93........Never,ever wore 'em since. I always wore Charlies to people's weddings and stuff when I was in.
