The Jersey Shore Marines will hold a celebration of the 233rd birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Edgar's Pub, 153 Sea Girt Ave.

Brian Gillespie, commandant of the new group formed as Detachment #1319 of the national Marine Corps League, said it is made up of active reserve, retired and former Marines and Navy Corps men attached to Marine units.

"We saw a need down here with a lot of Marines and in the area and the Jersey Shore Marines group was formed,'' said Gillespie, who served from 1982 to 1986 in the First Tank Battalion and is a police officer in Manasquan.

The group meets the fourth Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. the Manasquan VFW Hall.

The birthday gathering at Edgar's Pub costs $20 a person and includes three hot
dishes, a salad, soda, water and dessert, with a cash bar available, Gillespie
said.
