Tribute to the Fallen
The Fort Gordon Signal, GA

The closing ceremony for the Fourth Annual Tribute to the Fallen will take place at 2 p.m. today on Barton Field across from the Library on Rice Road. More than 100 Marines and some Navy service members have been running 24 hours per day since Oct. 19 to honor and remember the 1,090 Marines and Navy corpsmen who have died in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom since fighting began in March 2003. In all, they have covered more than 3,100 miles. Throughout the 19-day tribute the Marines and Sailors have been joined by volunteers who ran along with them or walked a lap or more to honor the fallen.

This final lap will be run by the entire group of Marines and Sailors who participated in the event, plus other Army and service units and their commanders. After the 21 rounds, which has been carried by either a Marine or Sailor during the tribute is handed off to the firing detail, a 21- gun salute will be rendered. The Marines and Navy extend an invitation to anyone who has lost someone in either operation to join them on Barton Field for the final lap in this year's Tribute to the Fallen. The local military motorcycle group veterans are expected to come out and show their support as they have done in the past. The public is welcome.
