Attacking those who serve
[Gregory S. McNeal]

This is just unbelievable:

An enlisted Marine, Josh Mandel, responds to a voluntary call to service for a second tour in Iraq. That means another guy doesn't have to go for round two — a Marine Reservist out there in the neighborhood who maybe just got a new job or had a kid doesn't have to face that tough choice when his nation calls and asks him to serve again. In normal times, or perhaps in any other time in American history, Mandel's volunteering — his decision to put his life on the line so someone else doesn't have to — would be commended. But not this year, and not in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio. Why? Because Mandel is a Republican Ohio legislator, and the Democrats see him as a rising star.

Here's how the wife of Bob Belovich, the Democrat running against Mandel, described Mandel's service. Note, these are comments Belovich has never denounced:

While Mandel was in Iraq she said: "Josh Mandel isn’t serving our country, he’s serving George Bush."

She stated he was:

"AWOL"

"Certainly he wasn’t serving our needs."

"[Mandel] feels that his obligation to George Bush is stronger than his, you know, his obligation to the people in the 17th District"

And Mandel:

"put his personal ambitions ahead of his constituents."

To top it all off, the candidate Belovich himself, when not hiding behind his wife's ignorance, delved into anti-semitism, stating that Mandel won merely because of his "Jewish name."

I hope readers in Cleveland will find a way to support Mandel on Tuesday. Even the Cleveland Plain Dealer has endorsed him.
