This might not belong in this part of the forums and I'm sorry if it's not, but I was wondering if on your uniform it has a symbol or a patch or something like that that says your MOS. I know the Army does but I'm not sure about the Marines.

Thanks!:usmc:

The only thing on our cammies is our name and "U.S. MARINES".

There are very few things that on the uniform that indicate MOS. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are MPs who wear MP badge, and embark crew who have red patches on their covers and trousers.

The only other things might be EOD, jump wings, SCUBA, and a few others, but that's a badge indicating some type of qualification, not necessarily MOS.

And a bursting bomb for Gunners!

The Army has a badge/patch for everything because they like to let people know how special they are.

The Marine Corps is the most important thing for Marines, and because of this, that's the only thing you'll see on the uniform...the words "U.S. Marines"

When I was in we didn't even have our names on our uniforms just U.S. Marines and the EGA. The squids and army dogs used to ask us why we didn't have our names on our uniforms and we would repond "because we can remember our names".

Red Patchers! 0481 Landing Support Specialist MOS (Sometimes whole Landing Support units Embark and all will wear them). Great article btw, being a Red Patcher i could relate as i've been asked many many times. We also wear a small red square patch in the middle of our cover to go along with those on our leg.

^ I wish it would have been a bit longer to include how the red patches originated in World War II.

Good to see others that have worn the Red Patch, in 92 when name tapes came in play, it was hard to get away with anything. They knew your name, Battalion and rank. Did not take a rocket scientist to figure out how to track you down.

The name tapes replaced a stencil. It is not a name tag from wal-mart that says hi I'm joe. The Marines actually have name tapes on their trousers as well. There is a purpose for it. Not sure why the Army has name tapes but the Marines have a community laundry on ship and all your crap is thrown into a washing machine the size of a volkswagon then dried. The name tapes are there so you can get your stuff back. I was also in during a time when we didn't wear name tapes and had a chevron on our cover. If a lance coolie encountered a sergeant it did not matter what his Mos all that mattered was that he was a sergeant.

It was always fun being with the CI guys in Iraq because we wore sanitized cammies (No rank or nametapes) and when we would go out to talk to the Iraqi's, we'd wear Captain bars because that's who the Iraqi's would want to talk to.

It was always fun walking into a room with SSgt's and Gunny's knowing that they outranked me but they had to call me Sir because they thought I was some new Captain...lol
