After they move on, it may be hard for the Marines of Delta Company to pinpoint where Lance Cpl. Jesús Suárez de Solar fell. It was in a plowed field along an uncompleted highway to Baghdad.
Yet for the young Marines of this light armored reconnaissance unit, Suárez will always be remembered as a friend and the first Marine of the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion to die in Iraq.
"He will not be forgotten by his family. He will not be forgotten by you, and he will not be forgotten by God," Navy chaplain Lt. Michael Moreno said during a memorial service yesterday for Suárez.
Thursday afternoon, while patrolling forward of his company's position, Suárez apparently stepped on an unexploded cluster bomblet left over from a U.S. artillery barrage the previous night.
