Exercise-induced asthma linked to body moisture

People who suffer from a form of asthma caused by exercise appear to produce less sweat, saliva and tears than people without the problem, researchers say.

The findings could eventually shed light on a condition known as exercise-induced asthma, which occurs in some people when they exert themselves in cold air.

Writing in the September issue of the peer-review journal Chest, the researchers noted that the low levels of moisture found in cold air appeared to play a role in exerciseinduced asthma. As the airways dry out, they become inflamed.

Measuring how 56 Marines responded to certain drugs, they found that those who’d been shown to be susceptible to exercise-induced asthma produced lower levels of sweat, saliva and tears than the other test subjects.

The study did not demonstrate a cause-and-effect relationship between sweat, tears, saliva and asthma. But the researchers concluded that the same body mechanism that leads people to produce less sweat and other fluids leads to their having drier airways.
