The Young Marines is a national organization sponsored by the Marine Corps League. It is a cross between the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) and the Boys Scouts of America. The Young Marines is open to boys and girls 8-18.

Keys maintains The Young Marines "are tougher." The eight-year-old Conowingo Elementary School student joined the Young Marines after seeing his brother excel.

Suhobus is a 13-year-old Perryville Middle School student. He has been a member of the New Castle Young Marines for three years. Suhobus said he has learned a lot, although he admits it hasn't always been fun.

"Boot camp is kind of hard," he recalled. Suhobos, wearing a scaled down version of the green and brown camouflage worn by adult armed forces members, boasts a chest full of ribbons.

The first ribbon is for learning the 11 General Orders. That's the code of conduct that members of the USMC must also memorize. Other ribbons are for sports, leadership and other acquired skills. They use 'The Yellow Monster' to guide them. That's the book Young Marines use to earn badges and learn other skills.
