3rd recruit dies during basic at Fort Jackson basic training

A third soldier in about a month has died during basic combat training at Fort Jackson, S.C. Pvt. Andrea Rosser, 21, of Raleigh, N.C., collapsed and later died Saturday while taking the physical fitness test, The (Columbia, S.C.) State reported in its Tuesday editions.

The deaths of Rosser and two other soldiers in late September do not appear to be related, post spokesman Pat Jones told The State. The fallen soldiers were assigned to different training battalions and appear to have died of different causes, Jones added.

Pvt. Derryl Britt, 20, of Durham, N.C., suffered a brain hemorrhage after complaining of dizziness and exhaustion while exercising. Britt died four days after the Sept. 23 incident, the paper noted.

Pvt. Dominique Gibson-Brooks, 19, of Houston, died Sept. 25, after she was found on the barracks floor suffering a seizure, according to the report.

Rosser’s death remains under investigation, Jones told The State. Rosser, who was scheduled to graduate from basic training Friday, collapsed during the two-mile run portion of the Army physical fitness test, the paper reported. She had been running for about 20 minutes and "began to show signs of physical distress," The State quoted the Army as saying.

When paramedics arrived, Rosser was conscious and able to sit up, the Army told The State. While being treated, she became unresponsive and stopped breathing. Paramedics performed CPR, and the soldier was taken to Providence Hospital where she died.
