WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- This Sunday, the 33rd Annual Marine Corps Marathon will celebrate a special team of runners who will put their efforts toward a great cause - supporting children of Marines. These team members will combine their training with modest fundraising goals to help the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation to "Honor Marines by Educating their Children(TM)."

For almost 50 years, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has helped accomplish what many Marines cannot - enabling their children to pursue dreams of higher education. The Foundation provides academic scholarships to upstanding and deserving sons and daughters of our Marines, with particular attention given to children whose parent was killed or wounded in action. This funding, provided by the generosity of patriotic supporters, helps set life-altering, new paths for these young men and women while honoring our nation's brave Marine heroes.

Last year's fundraising team raised more than $90,000 with 32 runners. This year 51 runners are on the team. Participants are arriving from all over the country from as far away as Wisconsin and California, as well as the Washington-Baltimore region. Some runners from outside of the Washington area that cannot attend the Marine Corps Marathon are participating in different races for the cause.

Support for the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation could not come at a more important time. To meet the current and escalating needs of educating these children, the private nonprofit launched an aggressive and comprehensive capital drive, "The American Patriots Campaign." Concluding on the 50th anniversary of the Foundation in 2012, this drive will raise $50 million in comprehensive funds over the next five years. This much needed increase in capital will allow the organization to nearly double the average scholarship award, provide special scholarships to children of parents killed in the Global War on Terror, and develop a sustainable, diversified base of support to increase our scholarship capacity for the next generation of Marine families.

The 33rd Marine Corps Marathon and 10k race will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2008 in Arlington, VA. Voted "Best Marathon for Families", the Marine Corps Marathon continues a combined tradition of dedication, sportsmanship, and patriotism. The race begins near the Washington Memorial Bridge overpass and finishes at the famous Iwo Jima Memorial which marks the 61st anniversary of that historic battle and flag raising. Since its inception, over 300,000 civilian and military runners have participated, earning the event its nickname "The People's Marathon." The marathon is the largest in the DC area, the 4th largest in the United States, and the 7th largest in the World. Only races in New York, Chicago, and Honolulu are larger. Last year, approximately 30,000 runners registered, more than 20,731 runners finished. The official race web site is www.marinemarathon.com .

Individuals and businesses wishing to contribute to the cause can visit www.mcsf.org or call 1-866-IWOJIMA (496-5462).

The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation began by helping one child. In 1962, a brigadier general, Martin F. Rockmore, and other retired Marine reservists in New York City learned that a Marine World War II Medal of Honor recipient could not afford to send his child to college. Always faithful, General Rockmore and his "band of brothers" organized a charity ball that December and raised $1,500. In the ensuing years, the number increased to over 20,000, totaling $31.2 million in scholarships, but the focus on helping one child at a time did not. Today, the Foundation's multitude of volunteers serve selflessly and effectively from coast to coast, amassing an impressive record of accomplishment, improving the lives and futures of thousands of Marine Corps children.

The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is a nonprofit scholarship organization and is not affiliated with the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Government, or the Marine Corps Marathon.
