KADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa — Explosives specialists successfully removed a World War II–era warhead from an area inside the base’s Gate 4 Sunday morning and transported it to the Kadena Ammunition Storage Area, where it was destroyed.

The warhead, from a U.S. 5-inch high-velocity aircraft rocket, was discovered in August during construction of a concrete gazebo.

Military officials with the 18th Wing worked closely with Japanese authorities with the ordnance disposal, wing spokesman Maj. John Hutcheson said in a release.

"During the removal operation, a 415-foot safety cordon was established around the site, affecting sections of Highway 58 and some residential areas in Mizugama Ward, Kadena Town," Hutcheson said. "Local police evacuated residents whose homes were inside the cordon and stopped traffic on Highway 58 while 18th Wing officials ensured that on-base areas were secured during the operation"

The warhead was transported through the base to an explosive ordnance range at the ammunition storage area.
